“Family” from “Welcome to the Madness” a blog by Princess Elaine

This is a post taken from the blog of Princess Elaine. Link here http://g8trgirl4life.blogspot.com/ . She has put into very beautiful words what a FAMILY my Evil Krewe has become since we all found John Heald’s blog. Link here  http://johnhealdsblog.com/

FAMILY by Princess Elaine

Normally I go out of my way to find a very odd word for my Word of the Week. However, this week I’ve chosen a word everyone knows and often takes for granted. In the last year-and-a-half, this word has taken on a whole new meaning for me. Without further ado:

family: a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation

Now I’m sure most of you are thinking, “Aww…she spent the weekend with her new grand baby, her sons and daughter-in-law; she’s going to write about them.” You would be wrong. I’ve learned that family doesn’t mean blood related.
Have you ever had this situation: You and a friend plan a night out. Your friend invites another friend saying, “Oh, you 2 will get along fabulously.” But you don’t. Now imagine, having an entire GROUP of people you’ve never met, only e-mailed and yet feel an instant connection. This my friends is just a mere description of Big Ed’s Evil Crew.
We didn’t all meet at the same time. Our common bonds started out two-fold: Our love for cruising and our fascination with John Heald, Carnival Corporation’s Sr. Cruise Director. This is where we met, on his blog, in virtual reality land (Thank you RC). We would leave comments for John, and most times he would respond. The most vocal of the group, in the beginning was Ed. He would tease and taunt John about a variety of things. Eventually, Ed started his own blog, dedicated to all things John. Over time, many of us would respond not only to John’s comments, but to Ed’s as well. In the beginning there were only a handful of us. (I would name names here, but for fear of forgetting someone, I won’t). As time went on and John’s blog got more popular, a Blogger’s Cruise was created. That was all that was needed.
The group of a few decided to plan “evil” events of our own for John based on some of his “odd” nuances. And a handful turned into 20. I remember one evening, when the e-mails were only at 10 a day, one of the ladies, and for the life of me I can’t remember who, called herself a princess. That’s all it took. For those that don’t remember, I am Princess Elaine, the quiet and single. (they didn’t know me well then). Not to be outdone, almost everyone gave themselves a self-titled name. Silly for adults, to be sure, but you’d be amazed at how dirty, raunchy and flirty royalty can be. And then there were 60.
As the cruise itself grew closer, the planning of evil, including our own T-shirts a fart machine and scrap booking took on a whole new life. Gone were the 10 e-mails a day; one morning I woke up to 180 e-mails! And I had only been asleep for 7 hours and had written before I went to bed. I was looking forward to meeting all these people that I had grown close to over the months. I figured I would see most of them at Blogger events while on the ship, and the rest of the time would be spent with my sister Lisa. Wrong.
Upon arriving at the pier on that beautiful Saturday morning, I was asked by security to please remove my shoes. Seems as though my brand new sandals were setting off the alarm. By doing so, I was holding up a very long line. Behind me I heard someone say,”Geez, leave it to Princess Elaine to slow us all down.” I turned to look at who in this giant terminal could know me…to this day, I still don’t know who that was, but from that point on I had a feeling this would be a cruise I wouldn’t soon forget. After getting through security and waiting in a never-ending line to get my most valuable cruise possession, the almighty “Sail and Sign” card, I heard someone from above yell, “Princess Elaine!” It was him in the flesh and blood” Big Ed and his wife Pat. So far, I hadn’t even boarded the ship and people were shouting my name.
We hadn’t plan to meet in any one particular spot, but once on the ship, I had to find Ed. Straight to the pool deck we went and there he was. Of course, I had to hug him and Pat. Then came the Chads, the Budds, the Cordles, Lance and Ilda…and on and on it went. It was as if the King was meeting his court. As we all met for the first time, it seemed, to me anyway, that we had known each other forever.
During the cruise was no different. Everywhere I turned I knew someone or someone knew me. Yes, Lisa and I went to all the Blogger events. They were fun and there were many surprises. As well, there were 3 people in our Crew that couldn’t attend the cruise; no worries…at each event I would call them so they could feel that they were included in the festivities.
By the end of the cruise, John had announced the 2009 Blogger’s cruise. Without getting into the nitty gritty, I am a bit turned off by Carnival and am debating if I will sail with them again. However, I AM booked on the 2009 cruise. Why? Because I don’t want to miss a minute of the family reunion. And not just a reunion…newbies too! Our little family has grown to a large family of 110.
And for the record, it’s not that we’re close just when we’re on a ship. We are there for each other during good times and bad. Daily. We share weddings, births, sickness, job loss…the good, the bad and the ugly. Just like any family would be expected to do.
The true moment I knew this was family came about a month ago. When you get angry, really, really angry at friends, you can choose to disassociate yourself from them, leaving them out of your life. There have been times in my life when I wish I had the ability to do this with my blood family but I could not. They are a part of your life forever. Such was the case last month. Without going into detail, I got very angry with a person in the Crew. I vowed to never speak/e-mail with them again. After a day or two, I realized that this person is a part of my family, good or bad. I’ve always spouted to others that the Crew was my family; but the point didn’t really hit home until that moment.
As I’ve said on this blog in the past, I’m not very good with words. I know what I want to say, that is, what is in my heart. But I feel as though I fall short sometimes. I hope I’ve been able to express here just how much I love this family and how joyous and enriched my life is because they are a part of me.
And so, knowing them as well as I do, at this point, someone in this family would say, “Enough with this sappy shit, where’s the piano bar and tequila?

130,000-TON CARNIVAL DREAM TO OFFER HOST OF ON-BOARD INNOVATIONS

The new 130,000-ton Carnival Dream – the largest “Fun Ship” ever constructed, offering a host of on-board innovations and amenities – is slated to debut September 21, 2009, operating a diverse inaugural schedule that features visits to magnificent European and Caribbean destinations.

Currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, the 3,646-passenger SuperLiner will be a new class of vessel for the line and usher in a new era of “Fun Ship” cruising. With a new layout, sleek hull and distinctive profile, Carnival Dream is designed as the ultimate vacation experience.

Unique features of the Carnival Dream include a new concept in entertainment called The Piazza, a stunning indoor/outdoor café and live music venue; the most elaborate children’s facilities at sea, including expansive play areas and a huge Carnival WaterWorks aqua park; “scenic whirlpools” that extend over the ship’s beam; and a variety of new stateroom categories, including those specifically catering to families. Carnival Dream will also offer many other exciting and innovative features that will be announced in the coming months.

“We’ve taken everything we’ve learned about shipbuilding and incorporated it into the magnificent Carnival Dream. By offering the widest variety of all-inclusive facilities and features at sea, we will create fun, memorable vacations for our guests, all at an incredible value,” said Gerry Cahill, Carnival president and CEO. “From a bold new entertainment concept called The Piazza to innovative new larger stateroom categories and the most elaborate children’s facilities ever featured on any Carnival “Fun Ship” - all of which are included in the initial cruise fare and accessible to everyone on board. Carnival Dream was specifically designed with our valued guests in mind,” he added.

Exciting Inaugural Schedule

Carnival Dream is scheduled to enter service September 21, 2009, with an inaugural 12-day Grand Mediterranean cruise from Rome (Civitavecchia) featuring seven spectacular ports: Naples, Livorno and Venice (two-day call), Italy; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Messina, Sicily; Monaco; and Barcelona, Spain. Two additional 12-day Grand Mediterranean cruises will be offered on October 3 and October 15, 2009.

The ship will then sail on a 16-day trans-Atlantic crossing departing Rome (Civitavecchia) Oct. 27 and arriving New York Nov. 12, 2009. Featured ports include Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, and Malaga, Spain; Las Palmas, Canary Islands; and King’s Wharf, Bermuda (overnight call).

From New York, Carnival Dream will operate two eight-day Bahamas/Florida cruises departing Nov. 15 and 23, 2009. These voyages include a call at Port Canaveral (in proximity to Orlando-area attractions), followed by a visit to Nassau and Freeport in The Bahamas.

Year-Round Cruising From Port Canaveral

Following its New York departures, Carnival Dream will reposition to Port Canaveral, Fla., where it will launch year-round seven-day Caribbean cruises Dec. 5, 2009. On its new Port Canaveral-based program, Carnival Dream will depart every Saturday on alternating weeklong cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean. Eastern Caribbean cruises will call at Nassau; St. Thomas/St. John, U.S.V.I.; and St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles; while exotic Western Caribbean voyages will visit Cozumel; Belize; Costa Maya; and Nassau. Carnival Dream will assume this route from the Carnival Glory, which will be redeployed to Miami to operate year-round seven-day Caribbean cruises beginning October 3, 2009.

Unique Features and Facilities
With a basis-two capacity of 3,646 passengers and spanning 1,004 feet in length, Carnival Dream is the largest and longest “Fun Ship” ever constructed and the line has made maximum use of the vessel’s added size by creating some truly spectacular on-board facilities and features.
Among the ship’s many highlights is a brand new concept in entertainment - The Piazza. Designed as a comfortable oasis during the day and a bustling entertainment complex at night, this breathtaking indoor/outdoor café and live music venue will feature a bandstand where a variety of musical genres will be showcased, along with a large circular dance floor. A massive floor-to-ceiling curved glass wall will separate the room, creating comfortable and spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas offering stunning ocean views. Guests at The Piazza can also enjoy full bar service, along with an espresso bar offering gelato and a variety of decadent baked goods, along with high-speed Internet access.

Carnival Dream will also take the traditional cruise-ship promenade to new heights with a half-mile, open-air promenade encircling the ship on Promenade Deck 5. Here, guests can take a stroll while enjoying spectacular ocean vistas, read a book, or just take in the sun from one of the many deck chairs that will line this unique open deck area.

Along the expansive promenade, four “scenic whirlpools” cantilever out over the sea providing magnificent sea views. Higher up, Lido Deck 10 will offer the most elaborate and expansive open-deck area of any Carnival ship with a tropical, resort-style main pool complete with a Seaside Theatre LED screen, a Serenity adults-only retreat, and numerous other features.

A wide variety of lounges, bars and nightspots - including a new dance club concept offering indoor/outdoor access - will be accessible via an 11-deck-high atrium whose ground level will offer a cantilevered bandstand atop a massive dance floor. Other features include an expansive 23,750-square-foot Cloud 9 Spa - Carnival’s largest and most elaborate health and wellness center to date.

Innovative New Staterooms

Particular attention was paid to Carnival Dream’s accommodations, as several innovative new types of staterooms will be introduced. The line’s first-ever “cove” balcony staterooms – located closer to the water line – offer beautiful sea views and exceptional value.

New deluxe ocean view staterooms – featuring a unique, guest-friendly configuration with two bathrooms – will provide the ultimate in comfort and convenience for guests who can enjoy their unique spaciousness, particularly families. In addition to twin beds that convert to a king, ample closet space and elegant décor, the two-bathroom configuration will include one full bathroom and a second bathroom featuring a junior tub with shower and sink.

There are even staterooms that can accommodate five guests – a rarity in new ship construction and also ideal for families. Additionally, there will be a wide selection of balcony staterooms and suites from which to choose – all offering the best in scenic cruising. Additionally, adjacent to Carnival Dream’s luxurious Cloud 9 Spa will be 65 spa staterooms and suites which will offer guests a number of exclusive amenities and privileges.

All Carnival Dream staterooms will feature the Carnival Comfort Bed sleep system with plush mattresses, luxurious duvets and high quality linens and pillows.

Families Will Live the DreamCarnival Dream’s numerous family-friendly amenities will include separate, purpose-built facilities for the line’s three distinct children’s programs: “Camp Carnival” for kids ages 2-11, “Circle C” for 12- to 14-year-olds, and “Club O2″ for teens ages 15 to 17, along with a full schedule of morning-til-night activities catering to each age group.

Sure to be a hit with guests of all ages will be Carnival WaterWorks, an expansive aqua park offering exhilarating water slides and various water spray apparatus. Carnival Dream will also be the first “Fun Ship” to feature a two-level miniature golf course.

All this, combined with the spacious two-bathroom staterooms and an attractive and convenient Port Canaveral/Central Florida homeport, will make Carnival Dream an exceptional family vacation.

MYLEENE KLASS named as Carnival Splendor Godmother

Myleene Klass named as the Godmother of the Carnival Splendor.

Even though John Heald pushed Angelina Jolie to be the Godmother of the Carnival Splendor for more then a year Carnival Cruise Lines has named Myleene Klass to be the Godmother.

Here is the official news release from Carnival.

MIAMI (June 9, 2008 ) British celebrity Myleene Klass, a chart-topping musican, singer and television personality, is to be godmother of the new Carnival Splendor and officially name the newest “Fun Ship” of the world’s largest cruise line in Dover, England on July 10, 2008. At 113,300 tons and carrying up to 4,914 passengers, the Carnival Splendor will be the largest passenger ship ever to sail from the Kent port chosen for this summer’s UK inaugural voyage departures.

The naming ceremony will also mark another first with Carnival emphasizing its choice of Britain to launch the Carnival Splendor by dispensing with, for the first time ever, the traditional champagne and using the highly acclaimed Nyetimber English Sparkling wine to smash against the hull.

Myleene Klass is a classically trained musician and singer who has achieved enormous success on both the pop and classical charts in the U.K. She is also a tremendously popular TV presenter who has hosted numerous high profile British TV shows and currently hosts “The Screening Room” on CNN International, as well as the British radio program Classic FM Breakfast Show. Additionally, in 2007 she became the face of renowned British retailer Marks & Spencer and is currently featured in billboards, retail displays and television advertising throughout Britain.

Myleene Klass said, “I am very excited, and a little nervous, at becoming a ship’s godmother for the first time, especially when it involves naming a ship the size of the Carnival Splendor. But my family is very connected with ships as my father served in the Merchant Navy.”

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO Gerry Cahill said, “Myleene is the perfect godmother to name Carnival Splendor, with her many talents complementing the many features of the ship, which is already attracting a broad passenger base — from families to couples to groups of friends – all with a common desire to enjoy a fun, casual and memorable vacation. The British cruising market is growing fast, with over 1.3 million taking cruises from the UK last year, and this is why we have chosen Britain for our inaugural summer season for Carnival Splendor.”

Nyetimber owner Eric Heerema said, “We are honoured that Carnival should choose Nyetimber 1994 Blanc de Blancs in preference to champagne for such a traditional occasion. The only problem is that we have such limited stocks of the 1994 vintage left that we were loath to lose even a bottle, but this is further important international recognition of the quality of our sparkling wine produced in West Sussex.” Nyetimber is served at leading restaurants including Le Gavroche, Gordon Ramsey’s Petrus, Chewton Glen and The Dorchester, and has been served at 10 Downing Street and by Her Majesty The Queen at many state occasions.

Carnival Splendor offers a comprehensive selection of restaurants, show-stopping entertainment, four swimming pools, a 5,500-square-foot children’s play area and Carnival’s largest-ever floating spa featuring a thalassotherapy pool, thermal suite and 17 treatment rooms.

Following the naming ceremony, the Carnival Splendor sets sail for a three-day mini preview cruise to Amsterdam, returning to Dover on July 13, when it will depart the same day for its official inaugural 12-day cruise to the Baltic countries, visiting Copenhagen, Warnemunde (for Berlin), Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn and Amsterdam. At the conclusion of its European program, which also includes a series of Mediterranean voyages, the Carnival Splendor will reposition to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for seven-day Caribbean departures. Following a series of 14- to 18-day South America voyages, Carnival Splendor begins year-round seven-day Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach, Calif., March 29, 2009.

For additional information and reservations on Carnival Splendor’s various European, Caribbean, South American and Mexican Riviera cruises, contact any travel agent, call 1-800-CARNIVAL or visit www.carnival.com.

Biography of Myleene Klass

April 2008

Myleene Klass is an entertainer. A musician, TV presenter and singer that attracts press column inches whatever she does and wherever she goes. In short, Myleene Klass is a star.

Myleene began playing the piano and her grandfather’s violin at age of four. She studied Voice at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she also added Harp to her repertoire. After completing her studies Myleene then won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music where she later graduated. Work as a session musician and singer quickly followed, leading to Myleene’s West End debut, joining the cast of “Miss Saigon.

However, Myleene first shot into public consciousness in 2001 during the ITV1 series ‘Popstars’. From thousands of singing hopefuls, Myleene was chosen to become one of five members of the controversial yet incredibly successful reality pop band, Hear’Say. Hear’Say’s first single “Pure and Simple” entered the charts at No.1, going on to sell over 1 million copies. However, despite a string of hit singles and a nationwide sell out tour, the band split in late 2002 leaving Myleene to pursue a solo career.

In 2003, Myleene signed a solo deal with Universal Classics. The first fruit of this deal was her debut solo classical album “Moving On. Entering the classical charts at No.2, the album went on to break records in all genres, entering the popular charts amidst pop and rock artists alike.

Never one to stay still, summer of 2005 saw Myleene change career paths, focusing on her love for television. Incredibly her first TV role was presenting the hit ITV1 Saturday morning music show “cd:uk”, an hour long live pop show and a real baptism of fire! Myleene hosted the show for six consecutive months interviewing a broad range of top music names from 50 Cent to Westlife.

cd:uk made the TV industry sit up and take notice of Myleene’s natural persona on screen, sending her presenting career spinning into orbit. 2006 saw presenting roles on BBC1’s “Heaven and Earth Show”, the BBC’s coverage of “The Proms”, “GMTV”, The All Star Talent Show” on Channel 5 and “Ghost Towns” for Living TV.

As part of World Vision’s 24 hour Famine Appeal, Myleene visited Sierra Leone in early 2006 to see how World Vision was working to help villages build up their lives. She has also been the face of various charity campaigns including NCH’s important Stop Text Bully campaign.

November 2006 saw Myleene visit Kabul in Afghanistan to present troops with a prize as part of the Daily Mirror’s prestigious “Pride Of Britain” awards.

Later that month Myleene took on one of her biggest challenges yet spending three weeks in the Australian jungle as part of ITV1’s massive show “I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here”. Myleene’s natural charm and positive personality won over viewers of all ages, generating acres of press coverage in the process. In fact her bikini clad jungle showers made front page news nearly every day of the show!

After only one week on “I’m A Celebrity” Myleene became the most searched for celebrity from the show ever on internet search engine MSN, and the third most searched for celebrity overall in the world. By the last week of the show, Myleene became the No.1 most searched for celebrity in the world by UK users.

The final show of the series saw Myleene crowned “Queen Of The Jungle” finishing in second place and firmly winning a place in the hearts of the nation.

Fresh from her jungle success Myleene decided to auction her now legendary white bikini to raise money for the victims of collapsed Christmas savings firm Farepak. The bikini sold for a staggering £7,000 helping many families have a better Christmas in 2006.

Offers of work have naturally flooded in for Myleene post “I’m A Celebrity”. She presented the live broadcast section of ITV1’s massive “X Factor” final and, became one of the presenters on both BBC1’s Saturday night entertainment show “The People’s Quiz” and the network’s new daytime show “The One”.

2007 saw the launch of her own movie show on the prestigious worldwide channel CNN International. “The Screening Room” has so far seen Myleene interview A List movie stars across the globe including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Robert De Niro and Johnny Depp to name just a few.

In addition to her television roles, Myleene also hosts the Classic FM Breakfast show every Saturday and Sunday morning. She also writes a monthly feature in Classic FM Magazine entitled “Myleene’s Hot Property”.

Myleene’s natural charm on television caught the eye of the directors of M&S who quickly signed her up to be the face of their 2007 and 2008 advertising campaigns. Myleene now adorns billboards and M&S windows across the country as well as appearing in their TV advertising campaign alongside such luminaries as Erin O’Connor and Twiggy.

July 2007 saw Myleene’s return to world of music with a brand new deal with EMI Classics. Since signing the deal Myleene has released two albums “Myleene’s Music For Romance” and “Myleene’s Music For Mothers” both of which reached No.1 in the classical charts. As Myleene says: “The albums are about taking classical music to the masses and letting a new audience know that classical music doesn’t have to be scary”.

In the autumn of 2007 Myleene hosted her own ITV1 prime time show “Saturday Night Divas” featuring performances from Chakka Khan and Celine Dion amongst others. She then finished off an extraordinary year hosting BBC1’s live end of year show “New Year Live”.

2008 kicked off with the release of Myleene’s first book, a candid pregnancy diary “My Bump and Me”. The book headed straight into the Top 10 bestseller charts the week after it shelves and has remained there ever since.

Shortly after, Myleene flew to Canada to host her debut show for the country, “A Listers Unzippped”, a fashion panel show with a twist. The rest of 2008 will see her present “The Classical Brits” for ITV1, a personal career highlight, followed by the launch of her very own baby range in September, in association with Mothercare, “Baby K”.

With her exotic looks (her mother is Filipino, her father Austrian/English), her extraordinary talent, and her passion for the entertainment industry, Myleene is a girl made more articulate and feisty by her experiences. One thing is for certain, we are going to be hearing a lot more from this eloquent young woman for many years to come.

ANYTIME DINNING?? NO WAY

Carnival Cruise Lines will begin testing a new flexible dining option with the Carnival Legend’s June 29, 2008, departure that will enable guests to choose an open seating option for dinner.  Guests who opt for flexible dining can  dine at whatever time they wish between 5:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. nightly in the ship’s main restaurant.

The new flexible dining pilot program aboard Carnival Legend will in no way replace Carnival’s popular classic dining system which provides a choice of either main or late seating.  Under classic dining, guests dine at the same table with service from the same wait staff  throughout the full voyage.

Guests will be asked to designate either flexible/open seating or classic, assigned seating prior to departure and their choice will be in effect for the full cruise.

The new open seating dining initiative is the latest addition to Carnival’s Total Choice Dining and designed to provide guests with additional flexibility in their dinnertime options.

Carnival will begin contacting guests sailing on the Carnival Legend’s June 29 departure and beyond to advise of the new dining initiative beginning later this month.

Carnival Legend sails year-round seven-day western Caribbean cruises from Tampa.

________________________________________

I personally like the traditional dinning. I like having the same servers everyday who after the first day know your likes and dislikes. Having the same table mates every day eliminates the doing the introducing thing every night. After the first day you can get right down to chatting about what each of you did that day on your shore excursions.

Also once everybody is seated the only people walking around your table is your servers. You don’t have people squeezing around you saying “excuse Me” as they get in and out of their table. Your servers can time your meal easier because everybody is on the same course.

People say it’s nice to be able to eat later on port days. You don’t have to rush to eat when you get back on the ship. You can rest a little before going to eat. Well so will everybody else that went ashore. So now you stand in line waiting for a table for 2 or a table for a party of 8 or 10 because everybody decided to eat at one time.
Now what about tipping??? I think the service will suffer with anytime dinning. The waitstaff will get the attitude why bust my butt I will get the same share of tips no matter what now. If you have a bad server one night how do you adjust your tips for that one night and just the opposite if you have a good server that would get tipped extra. Do we have to start carrying money to give that extra tip everyday. I’ve never had a server that I would have cut his tips but I always find myself handing the server something extra on the last night.

Give me the traditional seating with the same servers and table mates and I’m happy.
